The Situation

The distributor needed a reliable way to count apparel across warehouse zones without stopping to reconcile paper sheets and later retype the results. Product movement, size variants, and location changes made a simple spreadsheet difficult to trust.

The documented target was practical: give staff a scanner that knows the current zone, records the SKU and quantity at the point of work, and synchronizes with the central inventory record when a connection is available.

What We Built

The system pairs a mobile barcode application with a central inventory API. Staff scan with a phone camera or supported handheld device, validate the SKU locally, and associate the scan with a warehouse zone. The app can queue work offline and synchronize in the background after connectivity returns.

The workflow is deliberately narrow: capture the item, location, quantity, and time accurately, then make the updated record available to the rest of the operation.

How the Scan Flow Works

The app reads the barcode, checks the product record, and captures quantity without a separate paper tally.

Connected scans reach the inventory API immediately; offline scans wait in a local queue.

Implementation Details

The solution supports native camera scanning as well as common handheld scanner integrations. Batch mode is available for high-volume receiving, while the offline queue protects the count when warehouse connectivity is inconsistent.

The central record is the operational source of truth. Scans include the item identity, location, quantity, and audit context so a manager can review exceptions instead of reconstructing the entire count.

What Changed Operationally
